The scent has a unisex accord, making it suitable for both men and women. If you enjoy smoky lavender fragrances, you'll likely love this one. While it might remind you of Serge Lutens' Gris Clair, it's quite different. Serge Lutens is smokier (often described as 'burnt') and has a more melancholic feel. Serge Lutens Gris Clair is particularly nice to wear on cold days. Jo Malone's Amber & Lavender opens with a fresh mint note typical of aromatic men's fragrances. I found it more suited to semi-formal attire or suits rather than my usual casual wear. In the middle notes, a subtle spiciness envelops the cool mint, creating a pleasantly sweet and spicy blend. While I initially thought it might be the sweetness of amber, I actually detected more of patchouli's sweet scent. If you're curious about patchouli, you can try Narciso Rodriguez For Her (pink bottle) or Thierry Mugler Angel. These fragrances have quite strong patchouli notes that will give you a good idea of what it smells like. However, the patchouli in Amber & Lavender isn't as strong as in those two. It's a well-balanced warm spicy and aromatic blend of mint, patchouli, amber, and lavender. In the dry down, the spiciness fades, and a subtle lavender scent emerges. The smokiness is most noticeable in the middle notes. Keep in mind that fragrances can smell different depending on your body chemistry, and everyone's sense of smell is unique. So, it might come across as more masculine on some people. Don't buy this blindly. Make sure to test it on your skin (not just smell from the bottle) before purchasing. Personally, while I enjoy unisex accords and even men's fragrances, I didn't find many Jo Malone scents particularly appealing. This one and Black Vetiver & Cafe (discontinued) were the best for me. I didn't stop at just testing it in-store. I bought a 9ml miniature to try at home, thinking I'd purchase the full size if I liked it. However, I found myself hesitant to commit to even a 30ml bottle. It just didn't captivate me completely. This isn't a seasonal fragrance, it works year-round. On my skin, it lasted about 3 hours, which is quite good for a Jo Malone cologne.
