I used to use Banila Co primer foundation in summer, but when fall came, I noticed it was getting too flaky. I needed something moisturizing but not greasy, with a dewy look. As someone with combination skin, longevity is my top priority, so I was on the hunt for a long-lasting foundation. While considering the reasonably priced Espoir foundation, a staff member offered a skin test. I decided to try it and go about my day as usual. When I got home and looked in the mirror - wow! I was surprised to see it lasted as well as the Banila Co's powdery foundation. Of course, some oil did come through, but just blotting with a tissue did the trick. I bought it the very next day. Before purchasing, I was worried because friends (who hadn't used it themselves, just heard rumors) warned me about severe darkening with Espoir foundation. But I've never experienced any darkening issues. I'm really loving it now, and I get so many compliments on my skin. Even my mom kept asking about what I use, so I bought her one too!
It's a bit disappointing that it comes off easily when you touch your face, but if you avoid touching your skin, it stays put all day just as you applied it in the morning. Also, it's not super moisturizing. So even with my combination skin, if I skimp on skincare and just apply a matte sunscreen before this foundation (hoping to increase its longevity), I experienced severe deep dryness. This made my skin sensitive and I broke out. However, when I focused on thorough skincare and used a hydrating sunscreen before application, the blemishes subsided and I'm now using it successfully.
Apply essence, then create a moisture layer with emulsion. Follow with a hydrating sunscreen (like Espoir's watery sunscreen - something with a water-like texture) to lock in the moisture. Then apply the Espoir foundation using a sponge (this increases adherence for longer wear) with a patting motion. If it gets too oily around midday, gently blot the T-zone with a tissue. In the evening, do a light touch-up and apply some powder for best results.
