The product only has two ingredients - Dead Sea mud and grapefruit seed extract. To be honest, I just happened to purchase it while looking for a mud pack, as the mud content seemed high. I had heard that excessively generated oil can be absorbed by mud, so now I'm analyzing the ingredients...Well, from now on, I'll be sure to study first before buying cosmetics. As for the Dead Sea mud, it is widely known to be effective for rheumatoid arthritis. Searching for papers on Dead Sea mud, the most common finding is its soothing effect on joint inflammation. There isn't much on its skin benefits, though...Honestly, there are over 600 research papers on grapefruit seed extract, but for Dead Sea mud, there are less than 10. The papers I found on PubMed were only about 5. It would be better to wait for more research to be done. Anyway, I know it's not a harmful substance for the skin. Grapefruit seed extract is known as a natural preservative, but I've always been a bit skeptical about its credibility. This time, I searched the literature, and the conclusion is that grapefruit seed extract itself has no preservative effect, but it can easily be contaminated with the preservative benzethonium chloride, which gives it a secondary preservative effect. Grapefruit seed extract alone has no effect.
Cons
Well, I'm not sure if I've had a particularly good experience using the product. And since the weather has gotten colder, my skin hasn't been too oily or dry, so I've only used it in the summer. I'm not sure if it's effective for the skin, but since I heard it's good for joint inflammation, I'm considering giving it to my mother, who suffers from arthritis. It was difficult to find papers related to the skin benefits of Dead Sea mud. There was also little data on the minerals and microorganisms in the Dead Sea mud. I saw some claims about various effects from Israeli companies that produce Dead Sea mud cosmetics, but I couldn't find supporting research papers, so I don't consider them highly credible. I also couldn't find papers on its oil and sebum absorption effects. As for the grapefruit seed extract, it's made by taking grapefruit pulp and going through various chemical processes to synthesize natural petroleum compounds (phenolic compounds) into quaternary ammonium compounds. So there's a high likelihood of other chemical components being mixed in as well. The substance commonly found in grapefruit seed extract is benzethonium chloride, which fortunately has a hazard rating of 2 according to Hwahae, and is considered safe for use as a cosmetic ingredient by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR).
Tip
I'm aware that Hwahae's data is based on the EWG's Skin Deep database. According to EWG, the hazard rating for grapefruit seed extract is 3, while Hwahae has it at 6. The actual hazard rating seems to be 3. There are two botanical names for grapefruit - Citrus Grandis (hazard rating 3) and Citrus Paradisi (hazard rating 6). The latter is banned for use in cosmetics in countries like Japan, Canada, and the US, so the type used in cosmetics is likely Citrus Grandis Extract. I'm not sure if the Hwahae team will update this information. According to EWG, the contaminants found in grapefruit seed extract are benzethonium chloride, methylparaben, and triclosan. However, the research seems to indicate that benzethonium chloride is the predominant one, while the others are not as common. The FDA also considers pure grapefruit seed extract safe for use as a food additive, so it doesn't seem to be an overly hazardous substance. Also, the Hwahae app kept crashing while I was writing this review, and I had to rewrite it over 10 times. Please fix the Hwahae app...
