I've been using this cream for years! The upgrade to Cicalfate+ has really improved the packaging and how it absorbs into the skin. Absorption: The original Cicalfate's biggest drawback was its texture, but with the Plus version, it's so much better! It's thicker yet spreads more easily. Since it contains zinc oxide, there's only so much you can do about the texture, but it's significantly improved from the original version, making it more satisfying to use. Effectiveness: Despite the texture, I keep using it because it works! As you can see from its thick white ointment-like form, it contains zinc oxide which is excellent for soothing the skin. I've noticed it helps with inflammation, oil control, and strengthening the skin barrier. You can tell they've added mineral oil and other rich ingredients to make the zinc oxide easier to apply. I have combination dehydrated skin that gets very dry in winter, so while I might not reach for Cicalfate in spring and summer, I always come back to it in fall and winter. Zinc creams work well for me, and Avène Cicalfate has always been my go-to! I haven't tried other zinc creams, but I think Cicalfate's unique thermal spring water with copper and zinc gives it an edge in strengthening the skin barrier. Highly recommended for those with redness or skin damaged by harsh winter winds! Packaging upgrade: The old packaging makes me chuckle... that thin metal tube that would develop holes and leak cream everywhere. But now it's in a proper container! I can squeeze it freely without worrying about leaks, and I used every last bit.
Since it contains oil, it might not suit those with oily or combination skin, only those with dry skin. Make sure to check the full ingredients list before trying it!
This product doesn't provide hydration, so think of it as creating a protective oil barrier as the final step after applying your moisturizing skincare. It's excellent for protecting the outermost layer of your skin against dryness and harsh winds in fall and winter. Just remember to use hydrating products underneath!
