I apply it to my dry face and gently massage in circular motions, being careful not to irritate the skin. It emulsifies well when it comes in contact with water and rinses off easily. Then I finish with a slightly alkaline or low pH foam cleanser, which leaves my skin feeling refreshed. In the past, I focused more on thorough cleansing, but as I've gotten older, I've realized that protecting the skin barrier is more important, even if it means cleansing a bit less thoroughly. There is one potentially harmful ingredient, but the overall ingredient list is relatively short... It's especially good to gently massage the nose area.
