I used to only use cleansing water, but I found it annoying to have to wipe with cotton pads. I also bought it because of the blackheads and sebum in my pores. I chose it because I had a good image of the Avene brand and wanted to try it, and it really was true that oil needs to be removed with oil! 
Rolling it on really helped draw out the blackheads and sebum!
