I received this product as a gift, and it's been more helpful than I expected. The packaging describes it as a microdermabrasion product, but simply put, it's a physical exfoliant or scrub. As you might know, compared to regular scrubs, the particles are much finer and work to remove dead skin cells that have detached from the epidermis. Since it's non-invasive, there's no need to worry too much, but they say it's better if you have suction to draw in the crystals. Apparently, they use suction in professional skincare clinics. The product I used contains magnesium oxide and sodium bicarbonate, but aluminum oxide and sodium chloride are also commonly used in microdermabrasion products. After use, your skin definitely feels smoother. While it doesn't fundamentally improve skin condition, it does give you skin that takes makeup well for at least a few days. According to one study, microdermabrasion can reduce pigmentation and is effective for wrinkles and blemishes. I'm a bit skeptical about how much impact over-the-counter products can have in this regard, though. It's also said to increase the absorption rate of skincare products and topical medications by 10% to 15%. Human skin naturally regenerates about every 30 days, so you might think doing microdermabrasion every 2-4 weeks would give you smooth skin. But the product instructions suggest using it two or three times a week, and from my experience, it seems you need to use it more frequently than that to maintain smooth skin. I'm worried about my skin becoming too sensitive, so I only use it the night before I need to do a full face of makeup. I haven't experienced this myself since I use an at-home product, but I've heard that when receiving professional treatments, some people develop redness when diamond tips are used. However, compared to previous peeling treatments, there's less risk of inhalation and it's considered quite safe. Of course, even so... it doesn't truly improve the skin. If you really want improvement, fractional laser might be better as it stimulates the dermis to promote collagen production. After using a microdermabrasion product, it's best not to immediately use products containing AHAs (especially glycolic acid), retinoids, or fragrances. Your skin is in a sensitive state, so it's better to avoid irritating products. And don't forget to apply sunscreen!
