The more I use it, the flatter the brush becomes, making it uncomfortable to apply. It doesn't go on very smoothly, and I have to apply some pressure when using it, which makes my eye area a bit sore.

This product fits the bill perfectly. It looks natural, has decent staying power, and doesn't smudge easily. If you prefer sharp, vivid, and completely smudge-proof eyeliners, this might not be for you.

It smudges... It doesn't smudge right away, but if I do my makeup at 7:30 am, by 4 pm there's always smudging under my eyes. 
But I do have eyes that tend to smudge naturally. Could someone please recommend something that doesn't smudge?

I never use liquid eyeliners because I find them too unnatural. I bought one because people said it was good, and it does last longer than I expected. The advantage is that it applies beautifully and naturally (which is my style). It also blends well.
