Since I tend to use whatever's on the bathroom counter, I gave it a try. Interestingly, while the Hwahae ingredient list doesn't mention salicylic acid - the key component - the product packaging states it contains 2% salicylic acid. Salicylic acid, often called beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), can irritate sensitive skin but offers antibacterial benefits for oily, acne-prone skin and works as a chemical exfoliant. Most Korean products contain about 0.5%, but you can find up to 2% in some international brands through direct purchases or group buys.
ConsHowever, it's widely known that BHA in cleansers has minimal effect. I'm puzzled why they even included it. Since cleansers are quickly washed off, there's not enough time for the BHA to work on skin cells, so you can't expect much exfoliation or antibacterial action from the salicylic acid. Perhaps due to the high 2% concentration, my skin felt quite irritated. After my skin reacted badly when I first used it generously, I now use it very sparingly and only on specific areas. I guess I'll keep using it since it's here. My sibling didn't intentionally abandon it, right?
TipIf you're considering a product with BHA, opt for a toner or emulsion rather than a cleanser. The BHA in cleansers is essentially ineffective.
