I was looking into various toners as my current one was running out, and I came across this one that was described as water-based, gentle, and very moisturizing. I applied to be a Hwahae Trial Reviewer and was selected, so I used it diligently! My skin type is dry. It's not extremely dry, but a bit oily in the T-zone towards the evening. I'd say it's more on the dry side than combination. I don't usually get many breakouts, and I only get about 1 during my menstrual cycle. I tend to stick to products I've found work well for me, so I didn't think my skin was that picky about basic skincare items. But after using a different toner recently, I realized my skin does have preferences. Some of the things I liked about this product: 1. Texture Since my skin is dry, I do the 7-skin method with toners. So the texture is very important to me. I loved that this was a water-based formula - it was easy to dispense from the bottle and absorb into my skin. 2. Appearance The bottle is so pretty! I had seen many reviews mentioning how nice the peach-colored gradient look was, and I have to agree. It looks beautiful sitting on my vanity. 3. Soothing As a calming toner, it does seem to help soothe my skin. I sometimes get those bumpy, uneven patches on my cheeks when my skin's moisture balance is off. After using this toner, those areas seem to calm down. 4. Scent Some reviewers mentioned the scent being unpleasant, but I personally didn't find it to be an issue. I'm not very sensitive to fragrance, and I almost thought it was unscented.
ConsNow let me share some of the aspects I wasn't as satisfied with: 1. Moisture Level I don't usually use a lot of different skincare products - I mainly do the 7-skin method with toner and then use an eye cream and moisturizer. So I was hoping this calming toner would be really hydrating. I tried doing the 7-skin method with just this toner for about 3 days, but it just felt drying! It has a very drying, powdery finish, even after multiple layers. In the past, I could do 5 layers of the Mamonde Floral Softener and still feel super moisturized, but that product seems to have been discontinued in favor of newer essence toners. Compared to those, this Calming Toner just didn't provide enough hydration, even with the 7-skin technique. 2. Price Since my skin is on the dry, dehydrated side, I was hoping this balancing toner would really help with that. But the lack of moisture is disappointing. And with the 7-skin method, I was going through the product pretty quickly. I was hoping for a more affordable toner that could still provide good hydration at that usage level. The price tag on this one feels a bit high for the performance. Other than those points, I didn't have any major issues with the product. Overall, it was a fairly standard, unremarkable toner. The price is a bit steep for what it delivers, in my opinion. If I had to purchase this myself, I don't think I would, as I feel I could find a more hydrating toner for a better value. But I'm grateful to have had the chance to test it out through the Hwahae program.
TipAh, that's a great tip! Decanting the toner into a bottle and storing it in the fridge to use it chilled sounds perfect, especially for the summer. The cooling sensation must feel so refreshing when applying the toner. That's a wonderful way to enhance the experience and make it extra soothing for the skin during the warmer months. I'll have to remember that trick if I end up trying this toner myself. Using a chilled toner sounds like a real treat!

The ingredients seem good, it's fragrance-free, and it feels incredibly gentle~The formula is completely watery and there's no viscosity at all - it really does feel like water? Even for my sensitive, acne-prone, and dry skin, I didn't feel any rejection. It seems like a great product to use in the summer.
ConsI had more disappointments than positives. First of all, I have severely dehydrated and extremely dry skin, and even in this warm weather, once I applied it, it just didn't work for me at all. I had to apply it at least 5 times or more, which was quite troublesome in my busy mornings. On the other hand, my skin has a general reddish hue, but it didn't seem to calm the redness either. I've attached photos - the first one is from the first day of use, and the second one is after a week of use. As you can see, there's hardly any difference.^^: I had to do about 7 layers of toner at night to feel a bit more hydrated and slightly plump. I also tried using this product as a face pack, but my skin texture felt even rougher? My skin became bumpy and uneven..ใ ใ This product is not recommended for people like me with extremely dry skin. I tried using the same other products except the toner, and my skin felt so dehydrated that my makeup accentuated the dryness and my face creased when I frowned. ใ ใ The advertisement states it's suitable for moisture-deficient oily skin types, but I think it would only work for normal oily skin types, not mine. I think I'll only consider using this in July or August.
TipI've tried this product in various ways, but using it as a toner with a cotton pad seems to be the best. When I wipe it off, my skin immediately feels more refined. And then, when I apply the toner I normally use, it absorbs even better.

The ingredients are not bad, and it does not irritate my sensitive skin or feel uncomfortable, so I'm using it well right now. I don't use cotton pads to apply it, but instead gently pat it on with my hands, and it absorbs quickly, which I liked.
ConsThe price-to-performance ratio is a bit disappointing, and the scent, which many people complain about, is a bit of an issue. It has a bit of an old-fashioned fragrance that reminds me of my mom's cosmetics. For people like me who suffer from dry skin, this toner may not provide a sufficient moisturizing feeling. While it's a good toner to use during the sweaty season like now, it might be difficult to use in the winter.
TipUsing a 3-step skincare routine could also be a good option.

It was so pretty that it really lifted my mood when I saw it in person!! - It's a watery toner, but not completely water-like, so it felt a bit of a waste to just wipe it off. The texture was great for using it as a 7-skin method! - The ingredient list is clean! There are fragrance and phenoxyethanol, but I think it's good that a toner, which is the last cleansing step before applying products, doesn't have an unnecessarily complex formula. This product is simple!! I'll try using it separately on my T-zone and U-zone, as I have combination skin. It worked great on my T-zone! It provided the right amount of moisture, and the slight dryness left behind was perfect for my oily T-zone.
ConsThe slightly drier U-zone wasn't as satisfactory. Even though I applied it 7 times, it didn't feel completely moisturized. Since it's not a pure water-based formula, it felt a bit dry after some time, even though I was splashing water on my face during the 7-skin application. It couldn't fully replenish the moisture. Trying to use it as a cleansing toner didn't help either, as it made my skin even drier. Since this product is formulated for normal to dry skin types, it might not be enough for my somewhat dry cheeks. Dry-skinned folks might want to take note of this. *Also, the fragrance... Personally, I prefer natural ingredients and find fragrance a bit bothersome, even though this one is less strong than PEG. Those sensitive to fragrance might want to consider this as well.
TipFor the drier U-zone, you could try using a sheet mask or mist pack, and use this toner on the T-zone instead!!!!!!

ConsI felt a slight tightness, so I'm a bit disappointed.

Instantly soft and smooth after application
ConsHmm ใ ใ Although it's said to be for dry skin, it doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to contain a lot of fragrances, and most importantly! It dries out the skin. It feels like there's absolutely no moisture replenishment. The softness mentioned earlier turns into dryness over time. The skin becomes irritated and dry. And while it seems to soothe the skin, it didn't have any effect on clogged pores or acne. I'm a bit disappointed.
TipWhen used with a toner pack, it seemed to make my skin even drier. I think the Hanyul Artemisia line suits me better.
