Make sure to thoroughly wet your hair, and then part it with your fingers or a comb, like parting your hair. Squeeze out an amount about the size of your fingernail and massage it into your scalp. Doing this, even though it's a bit tedious, makes it easier to massage thoroughly and control the amount used.
(For reference, I have small nails...)

Focus on massaging the top of your head a few times, then do one side, then the other, and for the back, just use the tips of your fingers to massage as much of the scalp as possible.
The explanation may be a bit clumsy, but after using it, I found that I could use a smaller amount and still get a thorough massage.
