Since the formula has changed, the colors seem a bit different too. It's such a gorgeous deep red shade that looks stunning on deeper skin tones. What I love most is applying just a small amount in the center of my lips and then blending the edges with a natural base lip color like NARS Dolce Vita lip pencil to create a beautiful gradient effect. Even though it's a matte lipstick, it doesn't feel overly matte, and it adheres beautifully to my lips with excellent color payoff and lasting power. I was truly obsessed with this product. The red has quite a bit of black undertone in it, so when you layer it on, it gets incredibly dark really fast, almost like you've been eating soy sauce. The matte formula doesn't have that drying feeling, but because of that, it tends to be a bit sticky and smudges quite easily. If you're planning to wear this while drinking alcohol or coffee for an extended period, or if you want to do any lip activities, this product can be pretty inconvenient. This retro matte line applies beautifully without any dryness or flaking. The color payoff is a true, classic red. While Ruby Red leans toward cooler, bluer tones, Russian Red is a deeper red with more neutral undertones that gives you a sophisticated, polished look. There's some settling into fine lines, and since it's a lipstick, the wear time isn't the longest-lasting. The color payoff is seriously rich and long-lasting. I really appreciated that this matte lip doesn't emphasize dry patches the way some matte formulas do. The design is sleek and minimalist, and the size is just right—it fits perfectly in my small bag, so I can take it anywhere! You're probably not thinking about getting a light undertone, right? I received this as a gift and tried everything to make it work, but whenever I applied it, my face looked sallow and yellow. I was expecting this to be more matte, but it's actually not as matte as I thought. It works great when I apply a lip balm underneath first. Even though it's in the red family, it has a pink base, so I'd especially recommend it for cool undertones. If you want something much cooler, MAC Red is the shade to go for instead—I'd suggest that one more for cool-toned, bright complexions. That said, if you have a deep or dark skin tone, Russian Red might feel a bit too light for you. Make sure to exfoliate first before applying. It's a nice red that adds just the right pop of color, with a matte finish like MAC that feels really smooth and refined. I love how matte this finish is, and the color payoff is absolutely fantastic! What really impressed me is that it doesn't cause any flaking or peeling after application, which is such a relief. MAC's signature red is a sophisticated, deep red rather than a bright, classic red. If you have warm undertones and find that Chili looks too much like gochujang red and doesn't suit you, this is the red shade I'd recommend. With its matte finish, it applies smoothly and has excellent color payoff, so if you just dab a little on your lips and blend it into a gradient, it looks absolutely stunning! For a lipstick, the color deposit is impressive and the wear time is excellent, so there's really nothing to complain about. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a moody, atmospheric red shade.

This lip product works great for occasional touch-ups. While it's not my everyday shade, I can definitely get some use out of it during the fall and winter months. The color is absolutely stunning! If you have cool undertones, this shade is going to look absolutely gorgeous on you! I'm not sure if it's my application technique, but the lipstick goes on pretty thick.
