Since Fleur de Peau by Diptyque was my first fragrance from the brand and I absolutely loved it, I decided to explore another rose-centered scent that felt more unique. Both Korean and international reviews compared it to Frédéric Malle's Portrait of a Lady, which sealed the deal for me. Right away, I noticed this isn't a fresh rose at all—there's barely any citrus to speak of. Instead, on my skin, it's this jammy Turkish rose draped in cedarwood. It's not quite incense-like since it's not smoky, but rather incredibly creamy cedarwood that dominates the composition. The overall vibe is exotic and sophisticated, and honestly, it's a rose fragrance that even men can pull off beautifully. I've seen tons of YouTube reviews calling it sensual, but I'd describe it more as a high-quality, luxurious fragrance. As it settles, the base reveals a deeper, more honeyed dark rose note that's absolutely gorgeous. Compared to Fleur de Peau, the longevity is disappointing, so I had to deduct a star. Plus, it leans quite heavily into that exotic, Middle Eastern aesthetic, so it's definitely not an easy, everyday kind of fragrance.

Given that Diptyque achieved massive success with their rose-focused fragrance, it makes perfect sense why they chose to launch Eau Capitale in 2020, also drawing inspiration from rose but taking a completely different approach. The opening is remarkably spicy and bold, yet the dry down becomes surprisingly powdery and soft—it's quite the contrast. The powerful first impression that hits your senses right away will definitely divide opinions, though I believe this fragrance works beautifully for everyone regardless of gender, which is typical of Diptyque's approach. From the start, this was clearly designed as a "fragrance for those who will love it" rather than attempting to appeal to the masses. I'd genuinely caution against blind purchasing this one, as it's quite the adventurous choice. It evokes the image of a polished professional in a sharp suit, confidently moving through the financial district—that's the kind of sophisticated, commanding presence this scent carries. Compared to Diptyque's stellar reputation, this fragrance feels somewhat lacking in distinctive character and unique personality. The initial scent is quite strong, but if you love rose fragrance, you'll definitely appreciate how beautifully it lingers on your skin. When I spray it directly on my skin, the fragrance doesn't last as long as when I apply it to my clothes, so I recommend carrying an empty bottle around for touch-ups throughout the day.
