Retinoids are not only great for wrinkles and elasticity, but they're also amazing for... you guessed it, acne! No joke, it's true. The main ingredient in that famous acne medication (you know the one) is actually a retinoid. Of course, that's oral medication and the concentration is quite different, but the point is retinoids can help control excess sebum production, remove dead skin cells, and clear out clogged pores. (I only learned this recently too!) I originally bought this thinking I should start anti-aging care early, but my face felt like a desert the next morning. I thought, 'Whoa, too much!' and relegated it to 'sentimental item' status along with hyaluronic acid from the same brand (which has now made a comeback in my routine). When my acne was driving me half-crazy and I was researching that medication, I stumbled upon these retinoid benefits. I thought, 'Wait, couldn't I just use this?' Reading reviews (mostly from abroad since it's a Canadian product), I found people actually improving their acne! Moved to tears, I started using this product... and amazingly, it gradually started balancing my sebum, exfoliating, and clearing my pores. I'm impatient, so I used it daily, but it's recommended 2-3 times a week. Luckily, I adapted in just 3 days (your mileage may vary) and now use it daily without issues. There wasn't a day I didn't reach for my extraction tools, but gradually... things started clearing up and acne began to subside. Now, my skin is unbelievably clear. Not only has new acne stopped appearing, but existing blemishes and post-acne pigmentation are noticeably improving too (though I suspect my niacinamide serum is also helping here).
ConsThe smell is weird. What is this? It's like a mix of grass and something musty. But it's not overwhelmingly bad (like that signature scent from Dr. Jart's blue line), just more of an 'oh, that's odd' kind of smell. I don't think it has added fragrance, so I'm assuming it's just the natural scent of the ingredients. Also, it can be quite drying, so it's crucial to layer with a hyaluronic acid base and really focus on hydration. Don't be fooled by the initial slight oiliness - you need to follow up with a good moisturizer. Otherwise, you'll wake up to Sahara-dry skin in the morning!
TipMake sure to moisturize well and apply a light layer on top, adjusting based on your skin condition. Oh, and keep it away from direct sunlight and UV rays when storing! I trust everyone's already using sunscreen without me having to mention it...

However, I was pleasantly surprised by how gentle it is. As this is my first time trying a retinol product, I was a bit worried. On the first night, I carefully applied about 3 drops along with other cica emulsions and ampoules for extra protection. Since I didn't experience any side effects, I increased it to about 5 drops, and it still felt fine. I'm hoping to see improvements with consistent use!
ConsThe scent reminds me of rubber clay... I've been breaking out a bit, but I'm not sure if it's because of this product or my face mask. It's hard to say for certain. Shouldn't blemishes be disappearing instead of appearing? This is concerning...
TipMake sure to moisturize well with cica products beforehand, then apply this product in small amounts.
