I was about to repurchase Dolce Vita when I ran out, but this color caught my eye. Since my lips are always painfully dry, the satin finish is definitely softer and better. For me, it's more natural than Dolce Vita and gives that 'my lips but better' (MLBB) effect that brightens up my whole face. While it's better than the velvet finish, the initial moisturizing feeling disappears quickly, and it doesn't last very long on the lips. - Hwahae UserDry SkinSensitive SkinMar 11, 2017
My current favorite! It looks beautiful no matter how you apply it. It has a wine-like color with just a hint of shimmer. This one is moisturizing and the color payoff is great. The price isn't exactly cheap, and the ingredients aren't particularly impressive... It looks pretty no matter how you apply it, but it's even more beautiful if you layer a vibrant shade on top! - hi**********Dry SkinJan 18, 2017
I snagged a couple of these from Sephora. The complexion it gives is pretty versatile - it works well whether you have cool or warm undertones. While I'm more into products that give a matte look, this one's still decent. It's just not my first choice for everyday use. - Hwahae UserCombination SkinMar 5, 2016
The shade is similar to my natural lip color, but it makes my lips look even prettier when applied. There's a subtle shimmer that gives it an elegant feel. I love how creamy and smooth it goes on. If not used carefully, this shade could potentially make you look older. Rather than using it alone, I found it looks even more beautiful when used as a base and then blending a lighter shade towards the center of the lips for a gradient effect. - so****Combination SkinNov 20, 2015
I received this product as a birthday gift from Sephora in the US. It has a creamy texture that absorbs well, and the color payoff is excellent. Before getting it as a gratis, I tried it in-store and thought the fine shimmer particles clung to my lips, giving a slightly dated feel. But after applying the gratis one, I found it beautifully feminine. It's delicate enough to be a great daily lipstick. Personally, I also loved how it felt pleasantly firm on my lips after application. Due to the fine shimmer particles, those with more pronounced lip lines might find that it accentuates their wrinkles. - Hwahae UserCombination SkinNov 7, 2015
When I was in the States, a store associate recommended this to me, and I have to say, it truly lives up to the 'MLBB' (My Lips But Better) hype. It's like my natural lip color, but slightly prettier and enhanced. I really love how natural the shade looks. The staying power is quite poor, so I found myself constantly reapplying, which used up the product quickly. Considering the price, I don't think you get much product for your money. Also, if not applied carefully, the color can make you look a bit sickly or even older. - Hwahae UserDry SkinNov 4, 2015
The color payoff is fantastic. The shades are beautiful. It's perfect for when you want a matte look. It's matte, but perhaps a bit too matte. You might need to use it with a lip balm. - Hwahae UserCombination SkinSensitive SkinAcne SkinNov 4, 2015
For me, this is the ideal MLBB (My Lip But Better) shade. While many people consider Dolce Vita their go-to MLBB, it turns too brown on my lips, making it more suitable for autumn. When I first encountered Rikugien or saw swatches online, I wondered why anyone would apply such a pale color to their lips. Surprisingly, my natural lip color is even lighter! Rikugien adds just a hint of color, making it perfect for everyday wear. I first tried Rikugien in a 2015 Sephora birthday gift set that included Cruella. I loved it so much that I purchased the full-size product. As someone who prefers subtle makeup, I initially thought Cruella might be too bold. However, I discovered a great technique: apply a bit of lip balm or oil, then Rikugien, and finally dab Cruella just on the inner part of the lips for a slightly more vibrant look. Honestly, I prefer the texture of NARS Velvet Lip Pencils to the Satin ones. The Velvet formula glides on smoothly without shine - I was amazed when I first tried Dolce Vita. The Satin Lip Pencils are a bit more glossy and shimmery. While not as shiny as a lip gloss (typical of NARS), I do miss the Velvet Lip Pencil's matte finish. Now that Shiseido has acquired NARS, making it officially a Japanese company, it's interesting to note how many French cosmetic products have Japanese-inspired names. Conversely, many Japanese products use French names too. Rikugien, named after a Japanese garden, is an example of this trend. NARS' naming choices are often intriguingly enigmatic. For those with naturally pale lips, this works perfectly as an MLBB shade on its own. If you want a bit more color, try dabbing a red shade like Cruella on the inner part of your lips for a natural yet vibrant look.
