That's why it's a good choice for those with sensitive or problematic skin who don't want to exacerbate their condition. It's not about expecting specific ingredients to improve your skin, but rather about minimizing stress on your skin when you need to. I've dealt with acne-prone, oily skin, and this year I've been blessed with dermatitis and folliculitis to boot. When the inflammation was at its peak, with redness and comedones covering my face, even the cica cream I'd used for nearly 5 years felt too harsh. It felt like my skin barrier had completely broken down - my face was itchy all over, stinging at the slightest touch, and burning up. It was truly a nightmare. I usually stick to my skincare routine once I find something that works, but suddenly all the products I'd been using for years were rejected by my skin. I was at my wit's end. So, I turned to the internet and found Avène Tolerance Emulsion, which was said to be gentle. The ingredients list looked clean, with nothing that seemed potentially harmful, so I decided to give it a try. First off, the emulsion texture spreads easily. It feels matte right after application, but over time it does get a bit oily (hello, oily skin problems). However, this didn't worsen my inflammation or cause new breakouts. The best part? Absolutely zero irritation. At the time, even my usual cream would sting a bit, but with this product, my face felt comfortable after skincare. The hydration was also decent for my skin type. In summer, this product alone is almost enough. When my dermatitis was bad, I was only using ointment on bare skin, but even with oily skin, using nothing at all can leave your skin feeling tight. Having this to layer on top was such a help, both physically and mentally. It really was a lifesaver for me.
ConsThe biggest downside might be its lack of accessibility. It's hard to find offline in Korea, so I had to order it from overseas. Also, rather than providing moisture, it feels more like it's trapping existing moisture with its oiliness. This makes it a bit challenging for oily skin types like mine to use as a day cream in the height of summer. It doesn't feel heavy when you apply it or immediately after, but over time, it feels oilier than usual. It's definitely a no-go if you need to wear makeup. When I was using it alone, I chose it simply because it didn't irritate my skin - I didn't have the luxury to worry about anything else. But the truth is, using this product doesn't actually alleviate dermatitis, folliculitis, acne, etc. (Don't try to solve skin conditions with cosmetics alone - you'll lose time, money, and your sanity. Always consult a dermatologist for proper treatment and medication.) I bought it with the sole purpose of minimizing irritation and maintaining the status quo for my super sensitive skin. Once that goal was achieved, I started wondering if I should keep dealing with the oiliness. Plus, because it's made with simple, non-irritating ingredients, you can't expect more than basic moisturizing effects. Now that my skin has recovered significantly, I need to address the scars left by all the inflammation, and this product alone isn't enough for that. So I tried to use it alongside my regular skincare products, but I haven't found the right balance yet. Currently, I'm not using it daily, but once a week after exfoliating, I apply a tiny amount, just enough to create a thin layer on the skin. That seems to work well enough.
TipFor those of you who need to apply ointment on bare skin after cleansing due to dermatitis or other skin conditions - try this: After letting the ointment absorb, squeeze out a pea-sized amount of this product, spread it on your hands, and gently press it onto your face. It'll make your skin feel much more comfortable.
