But since I started using this soap, that tightness has completely disappeared. It looks like a regular bar of soap, but it lathers well and leaves my skin feeling clean and refreshed without any of that uncomfortable tightness. Amazingly, it even leaves my skin feeling moisturized! Since I've been using this soap, my skin doesn't get as dry in winter, which is fantastic. It's also affordable and lasts a long time once opened, making it economical. I think I'll stick to using just this soap from now on.
ConsThe only downside is that you can only buy it online, and to avoid shipping fees, you need to purchase five boxes at a time!
TipUsing it with a mesh pouch creates even more lather and works great.

I've been using it for over 4 years now, since I was in Japan. I've wanted to write a review for so long, but it wasn't listed as a product here, which was disappointing. The biggest advantage is that it cleanses thoroughly, leaving your skin squeaky clean, yet there's no tightness after washing!!!! No matter how much I focused on hydration, it only helped during application. My skin felt so dry deep down. But when I switched from my cleansing oil and foam cleanser to the Shabon-dama soap, not only did the deep dryness disappear even in the dead of winter, but the adult acne (around my chin) that had been bothering me for years completely cleared up. True to its additive-free name, it's 100% soap base, making it gentle enough even for newborns. (In Japan, many people switch to Shabon-dama products when they have a baby.) It doesn't contain any added fragrances, so it has a natural soap scent (like laundry soap), which is even better for those sensitive to fragrances or for babies. The soap bar is firm, so it doesn't soften easily. If you use it with a soap net, it lathers well and drains easily, allowing for long-lasting use. I use this soap for both my face and body, and it has eliminated my dry, flaky skin patches.
ConsI haven't bought it in Korea yet, but it's disappointing that you can only purchase it online through the Shabon-dama Korean website or social commerce platforms. In Japan, the accessibility was great because you could buy it anywhere - supermarkets, drugstores, LOFT, etc. I've been using it for over two years, but I can't help feeling regretful about why I didn't discover this product sooner..
TipSome might worry about radiation because it's a Japanese product, but Shabon-dama's headquarters and factory are located in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, which is far from Fukushima, so that's somewhat reassuring. Many people think foam cleansers are better for the skin than soap, but most commercially available foam cleansers, regardless of their name, are mainly composed of purified water, glycerin, synthetic surfactants, and PEGs. Synthetic surfactants break down the skin barrier, strip moisture from the skin, and gradually damage the skin's natural state. If your skin feels oily on the surface but dry underneath, and you're constantly dealing with blemishes, it's best to start by changing your cleanser. The surfactants in soap are natural and less harsh on the skin compared to synthetic ones, helping to balance your skin's oil and moisture levels. No matter how good the products you apply after cleansing are, what's the use if your skin barrier is already compromised?
