The hydration was great. The strong scent might be polarizing for some users. After using this, my skin turned red and itchy, so I had to go to the doctor. I bought it because of the good reviews, but it doesn't suit me. What a disappointment. - Hwahae UserDry SkinAcne SkinSensitive SkinFeb 21, 2020
As a member of The Hwahae Testers, I had high hopes for this product due to its rave reviews. However, unfortunately, it didn't suit my skin. I've used tamanu oil a few times before without any issues, so I didn't expect any problems. I guess I should have been more cautious. Since I can't write about its effectiveness for me, I'll share some general information about the product in the tips section. In conclusion, I'd recommend this to those who respond well to tamanu oil and those who want to experience its unique benefits. However, given the high concentration of specific ingredients, thorough patch testing is advisable before use. If tamanu oil works well for your skin, I'd especially recommend this for hot and humid weather when you don't want to miss out on its benefits. In cold, dry weather, applying pure tamanu oil along with other products might be sufficient. Recently, my skin has been dry, causing flaky dead skin cells on my cheeks and even itchiness. I applied this product generously, hoping it would soothe my skin, but the areas with flaking turned completely red. There was no stinging or allergic reaction, so I decided to wait and see how it would be the next day. The following morning, things seemed fine, so I washed my face and reapplied. This time, my entire face, including my forehead, turned red. I was shocked because my forehead is usually the most resilient part of my face. I immediately washed it off and applied my usual products, but it took a full four days for my skin to calm down. I suspect there must be an ingredient that doesn't agree with me. Still, I haven't given up completely. I might try it again when my skin is in better condition, and if I have a different experience, I'll come back to update my review. The texture spreads smoothly and absorbs well. Despite containing a lot of oil, it doesn't feel overly greasy. Instead, it has a nourishing feel characteristic of tamanu oil, providing an appropriate balance of oil and moisture. It might be difficult to use alone in dry seasons, but in summer, depending on your skin type, it could be sufficient on its own. I believe it contains 10% tamanu oil, which gives it a strong, distinctive scent. I personally don't mind such scents and prefer them to artificial fragrances, but it's definitely an acquired taste. Some people might find it tolerable, while others might struggle with it. - Hwahae UserCombination SkinAcne SkinSensitive SkinFeb 20, 2020
* This is a review from The Hwahae Testers * (I have sensitive and dry skin that's prone to dermatitis when I'm tired or unwell!) - Gentle My skin is quite sensitive, so I usually feel a tingling sensation right away if the ingredients aren't great. But with this, I didn't experience any irritation after applying it! I found some YouTube reviews where people saw improvements with atopic dermatitis and pigmentation. However... I didn't notice any particular effects myself. - Moisturizing When I apply this and then my cream, my skin feels really firm and hydrated!!! It stays moisturized until morning, and when I wash my face, I'm amazed at how smooth my skin feels. - Scent Due to certain oil ingredients, it has a slightly medicinal scent that might be quite polarizing! I'm not usually sensitive to cosmetic fragrances, but I didn't particularly like this one. Still, it's a scent that makes you feel like it's good for you, if that makes sense? If you enjoy this type of fragrance, it probably won't bother you. - Itchiness Since I have sensitive skin, I was curious how others might react, so I tried it with my father! But both of us experienced a slight itching sensation after some time. It seems quite gentle overall, but there might be something that doesn't agree with our skin. Those with sensitive skin, please take note! In reality, cosmetics seem to work differently for everyone... Even if a product works well for others, it might not suit you personally. While this product didn't work particularly well for me, if you search on YouTube, you'll find people who've seen improvements with atopic dermatitis and many others who like it. It might be worth considering that when making your decision! - Hwahae UserCombination SkinAcne SkinSensitive SkinFeb 17, 2020
# The Hwahae Testers Review # I received the product on February 13th and I'll honestly share my experience after using it for 4 days! Truth be told, I wanted to use it consistently until the 21st, but I had to stop as it didn't suit my skin :(. I have combination dehydrated skin that gets very oily in summer and quite dry in winter, so I always use a serum. I prefer lightweight formulas that I can layer multiple times, as heavy textures make my skin feel uncomfortable. I usually go for formulas with minimal oil and maximum hydration! Although this serum was more oil-rich than I typically prefer, I liked how it seemed to balance my skin's oil and moisture levels well. However, it turns out my skin doesn't need that much oil, so it didn't work for me. * Application :) It applies very smoothly, which made each use a pleasant experience. It feels more oil-rich than hydrating, but unlike typical serums or oils, it has a whipped cream-like texture with a silky finish. * Absorption :) It absorbed better than I expected. Two pumps were enough to cover my entire face without leaving any residue, creating a smooth skin texture as it absorbed. * Moisturizing power :) Perhaps due to its oil content, it felt more moisturizing than regular serums. This might be better suited for dry skin types looking for an oil-rich serum rather than those seeking a hydrating one. It might be a bit heavy for oily skin types. For the first two days, I was thrilled with how it felt, thinking I'd found my holy grail serum... :( The reason for the 3-star rating is that despite not suiting me personally, I felt the product quality was good! Also, the scent might be divisive - it has a natural, herbal fragrance that I initially found off-putting, but later grew to appreciate for its subtlety. In conclusion, while I really liked this serum, it didn't agree with my skin. On the third day, my face started itching and about 7 small blemishes appeared. (I usually get inflammatory acne, but rarely these small bumps.) My skin had been in its best condition recently, but this product seems to have worsened it, so I quickly stopped using it. I'd like to try it more, but I'm afraid of another breakout.. I'll update my review if I try it again :( + Updated 2.20 It seems this product was indeed responsible for the breakout on my face. After returning to my usual skincare routine for about 3 days, my skin feels more stable. The product feels too oil-rich, so if you have oily or normal skin, you should only use one pump for your entire face :( I used two pumps and it caused havoc all over my face.. Please don't apply too much!!! - Hwahae UserCombination SkinSensitive SkinFeb 15, 2020
This is a review from The Hwahae Testers. I've always had good results with tamanu oil, so I applied for this event. I was surprised by its cream-like texture. It made me wonder if they designed it with an ointment feel in mind. The hydration level doesn't seem very high. I used it as a cream substitute, but my skin dried out quicker than expected, so I had to layer my usual cream on top later. When applied, it has that distinctive rich feeling characteristic of oils. This product didn't work for me. Perhaps it's because of the other natural oil ingredients... A few hours after application, small, red, blister-like bumps appeared around my eyes and mouth. It's itchy and quite uncomfortable... I think I might need to visit a dermatologist. - Hwahae UserDehydrated SkinAcne SkinSensitive SkinFeb 14, 2020
🚨The Hwahae Testers Review🚨 My skin type: I experience deep dryness on my forehead, and when I use exfoliating pads, I get blemishes about 90% of the time the next day. I'm prone to redness from environmental factors and easily flush from physical stimulation. I tend to get small bumps mainly on my cheeks and temples. My usual morning routine: I gently cleanse with micellar water in a foam container, followed by a water rinse. If I notice more pronounced bumps, I'll use a cotton pad soaked in toner to gently wipe, then rinse with water. On days when my skin feels hot or looks red, I'll do a toner pack with houttuynia cordata extract, then hydrate with an aloe gel-type toner, apply a thin layer of propolis serum on dry areas, finish with sunscreen (I use organic UV filters in dry seasons and mineral filters in summer). I rarely wear makeup and didn't during the 12-15 day testing period. I applied a thin layer of the cream every evening, starting with the left cheek as the initial test area. ✔ Texture (If you were expecting a super hydrating serum, nope! It's an emulsion with a soft, rich feel) ✔ Application (Applies very creamily and absorbs quickly without pilling) ✔ Skin texture (My bumps and uneven texture were stressing me out, but the exfoliating ingredients really helped clear them up) ✔ Scent (If you've used tamanu oil before, you know - it's like a mix of strong nutty and herbal medicinal scents) I applied it to half my face for testing. At first, I thought I'd found my holy grail product - no deep dryness compared to the other side, and my bumps disappeared! Update 2/20: I couldn't give up on this product that I wanted to love so much. Now I use it sparingly, dabbing small amounts on areas with thicker skin like my forehead and chin when I have more pronounced bumps. It doesn't cause swelling, stinging, or itching when used this way. Update 5/31: Since tamanu oil had helped with my acne pigmentation before, and I wasn't experiencing the previous side effects, I've been applying it thinly on pigmented areas and bumpy spots. Looking at my face now compared to the previous review photos, I really feel that tamanu doesn't disappoint! I don't even wear sunscreen regularly, and my skin is thin and prone to stubborn pigmentation (usually takes about 6 months to fade). I was surprised to see how much of the pigmentation had faded when I came to look at the review photos. I'm adding a new photo - it's quite detailed (sorry!) but it's unfiltered, taken with a Galaxy S20. Unfortunately, whether it was the chemical exfoliants or some other oil besides the tamanu, I felt itchy while sleeping after first use and ended up scratching (I should have washed it off...). In the morning, the eye area on the side I applied it was swollen (I had intended to apply only on my cheeks, but since tamanu oil had worked well for me before, I went all the way up to near my eyes, which was a mistake). My chin area was red and itchy, and under my eyes was both itchy and stinging. Still, hoping it might work, I didn't use it in the morning but applied a very small amount to my cheeks only (avoiding eyes) that night. The redness remained, but the itching was less than before, so I didn't want to believe this was the problem. However, seeing that only that side of my face remained red compared to the other side, I decided to test it on the other side while sleeping. Again, I woke up itching and scratching. When I opened my eyes, I had that weird feeling you get when your eyes are swollen, you know? I immediately got up to look in the mirror and this time my eyelids were swollen, my cheeks were red and itchy. I hadn't applied it near my eyes, but I think some residue on my hands must have touched my eyelids. While the price seems high for the amount, given the quality ingredients, it wouldn't be an issue if it suited my skin. The biggest inconvenience is that you can't test a sample of this product designed for skin concerns. Scent (As those who've used tamanu oil know, it's a strong nutty scent mixed with herbal medicine smell. It's likely to be very polarizing, and even as someone who's used oils before, the scent that rises to my nose is hard to get used to...lol) The first photo is right after application, the second is from the morning when I tried to capture the swelling (though it doesn't show well). The circled area was particularly bad. It's still stinging and itchy. The last photo is of the other side of my face, sacrificed for a final test with this product... The shininess is because I immediately washed it off, did a toner pack, and applied a thin layer of ointment. I feel this product alone is not enough to provide hydration. I'd recommend locking in moisture with your usual hydrating essence, then doing a small patch test on your chin area, avoiding the eye area! It would be best used in the emulsion or cream step of your routine. For those with very dry skin, you might want to use an additional cream. Since it contains chemical exfoliants, I personally think it's better not to use it in the morning. Try using it only at night, and if it suits you well and you want to use it during the day, make sure to apply sunscreen. - Hwahae UserDry SkinSensitive SkinFeb 13, 2020
I often watched Ria Yu's channel and was contemplating whether to buy this product or not. Luckily, I was selected for The Hwahae Testers and got to use it with excitement. Despite my super sensitive skin, I applied the Great Barrier Relief without hesitation because the tamanu oil, which Ria Yu frequently uses, had worked really well for me before. The texture is thick, and it has a distinct herbal scent typical of tamanu oil. I was fine with it since I've used tamanu often, but first-time users might be surprised. It applies smoothly on the skin and after application, it creates an oil barrier to prevent moisture loss and dryness. For my dry skin, this essence prevents that tight, cracking feeling after washing my face. The texture is so thick and rich when squeezed out that I'm not sure whether to call it an essence or an emulsion. I have naturally sensitive skin, so if there's even a slight incompatibility with an ingredient, I get small blemishes on my cheeks and near my hairline, and the areas where I apply the product on my neck become itchy. I'm not certain which ingredient didn't agree with me, but I suspect it might be due to the small amount of rosehip oil or coconut oil-derived ingredients. Whenever a product contains even a trace of coconut-derived ingredients, I always get bumpy skin on my cheeks. This happens even with rinse-off cleansers, not just creams or serums. Before receiving the Great Barrier Relief, I noticed these ingredients on the label but thought the amounts were small enough to risk it. Sure enough, I developed small blemishes and my neck started itching. I'm still scratching it now, unfortunately. It's hard to judge based on one use, so I applied it three times over two days. Each time, within minutes of application, I experienced itching and a few small bumps appeared. Right after application, my skin feels soft and hydrated, which is great, but it's such a shame that I can't continue using this product. This product would likely be excellent for those with dry skin who respond well to tamanu oil or coconut-derived ingredients. It can help combat dryness without directly applying oil, and if you layer a cream on top, it would create a skincare routine that effectively blocks out dryness. Rather than thinking of it as absorbing, imagine it as creating a protective oil barrier. Personally, I love how my skin feels calmed and smooth the morning after using tamanu oil. It's really disappointing that despite this product containing tamanu oil, some other ingredient doesn't seem to agree with my skin. - Hwahae UserDehydrated SkinAtopy SkinAcne SkinSensitive SkinFeb 13, 2020
The Hwahae Testers review: I became interested in oils after watching Ria Yu's YouTube channel and tried rosehip oil, but it didn't provide any moisturizing or blemish-soothing effects for me, so I stopped using it. This product contains not only rosehip but also argan oil, which I'm trying for the first time. Since it's designed for soothing and hydration, I thought it might be suitable for acne-prone skin, so I applied to be a Hwahae Tester. 1. First, it absorbs exceptionally well. One pump is enough to cover the entire face. 2. The texture is slightly creamy rather than liquid, making it easy to apply. 3. It didn't trigger any breakouts. This product made me realize once again that natural oils don't suit my skin... While I didn't feel any tightness immediately after application, after about an hour, I started to experience a strange drying sensation and slight itchiness, so I don't think it's suitable as a moisturizer. It also didn't help with reducing redness from blemishes. Moreover, the scent was a bit off-putting. It reminded me of cooking oil. For those who typically respond well to natural oils, this cream-like oil formulation could be a convenient option to use. - Hwahae UserOily SkinAcne SkinSensitive SkinMar 9, 2019
It absorbs well and feels like it's really sinking into the skin. I was excited to buy this because I love Riau's philosophy. The tamanu oil in it should be great for acne scars. I don't think this works for me. They said it could be used as an emulsion, so I applied it alone, but I felt deep dryness. Also, I'm not sure which ingredient it is, but my skin became tingling, itchy, and red. I'll just use a small amount on areas with blemishes. If it suits you, this could be a really great cream. I see other reviews are positive.
