As someone who rarely uses conditioner (my back hurts, and I'm short on time), I'll review this product with the same usage pattern. Being 8 months post-perm with damaged hair, I've been applying conditioner before shampooing. I noticed a difference with this product from day one. Checkmark! I have an oily scalp. After discovering by chance that sulfates made my scalp oilier and itchier, I've mostly avoided sulfate shampoos. So I'm very positive about and used to low pH shampoos like Avalon. However, I'm reconsidering lately! My once-oily scalp is now transitioning from combination to slightly dry due to weather changes and age. Sulfates clearly don't suit me, and Aromatica, which I thought would be more moisturizing than Avalon, leaves my hair a bit matted. So I've been sticking with Avalon, reducing washes from daily to every 3-4 days. Plus, with the perm issue, even after pre-cleansing with conditioner and using Avalon, I started feeling dryness in winter. I was about to explore new shampoos when I was selected for The Hwahae Testers! Keep this background in mind as I share my experience by usage day. (In summer, my combination scalp can still manage) First Use Experience: Definitely softer than my previous product! For a more balanced and transparent review, I skipped the pre-cleanse with conditioner and went straight to pre-wash, main wash, and rinse. At this point, even during the pre-wash, the tangles from my perm started to loosen! That's when I realized, 'Oh, this is definitely more moisturizing than Avalon! Nice!' Honey Tip: As a fan of low pH shampoos, I want to share some usage tips for those who find these shampoos inconvenient due to less lather. I'll include these in the tips section! Second Use Experience: I followed the same pre-wash, main wash, rinse routine. It definitely felt moisturizing and soft. Unlike my previous shampoo, I didn't experience dryness or itchiness, and there was less sebum production, allowing me to easily go 3 days without washing! Although my scalp started itching on the second day, my hair felt less dry compared to the previous shampoo, despite its cleansing power. Plus, there was noticeably less flaking when I scratched my itchy scalp!
ConsThe bubble gum scent doesn't match the seaweed shampoo name... When I opened the package before use, I was surprised by the bubble gum scent. It smells like those colorful gumballs from coin machines at amusement parks or resorts. The first use was great, except for this scent. It's the one flaw. I wish they'd change it to a scent that matches the seaweed shampoo name, like a fresh lemon or ocean scent? Or even an herbal scent? Anything more suitable would make me want to recommend it. While the performance and effects might be most important for users like me, for general consumers, the scent is often the crucial first impression before purchase.
TipSweet Tips for Low pH Shampoos Most people are used to sulfate shampoos that lather instantly with a small amount. However, low pH shampoos are different, similar to facial foam cleansers. They're designed to prevent over-cleansing, balance pH, and leave beneficial oils on the skin. So, they should be used differently than cheap sulfate shampoos. This approach helps you get the best results with a similar amount of product. Please consider my scalp condition when reading these personal tips. Key Points: 1. Pre-wash 2. Add water drops (before and during shampooing) 3. Rub palms together (before shampooing) 1. Pre-wash: I learned this tip from beauty and dermatology sources when I had an oily scalp. It works even better with low pH shampoos! 2. Adding water drops: I use 1 pump for pre-wash and 1 pump for main wash. Before pre-wash, thoroughly wet your hair, then wash your face or body. This allows your scalp and hair to absorb enough water. Before starting, lightly squeeze out excess water so it's not dripping. Then, use 1/2 pump for the back and center of your head. When the lather starts to diminish, quickly run your hands under water and continue shampooing from the back to the center. Repeat with 1/2 pump for the front to center. Do the same for the main wash, but you'll likely need to wet your hands only once as it'll lather more easily. My amateur theory is that coconut-based shampoos lather better with more moisture compared to sulfate shampoos. Perhaps it's because the weaker chemical bonds need more water molecules. So, adding water drops during shampooing might be necessary! 3. Rubbing palms: I've noticed some friends prioritize speed above all else.
