Semi-matte has finer particles and is less dry, resulting in less pilling. Choose matte to completely eliminate skin's glow, or semi-matte to maintain natural glow and reduce pilling. Note: I have combination dehydrated skin, so my face always has some shine. - Color: * 1w golden ivory (formerly light olive): Slightly darker than Korean shade 23, with a yellow undertone. Recommend if you love MAC's signature cornmeal yellow. Also tried 3w golden beige (formerly buttered tan) but it's too dark (like Double Wear Rattan), only using it on chin with high SPF sunscreen. * 3n beige: Perfect match for Korean shade 23 ivory base, giving a subtle brightening effect on my skin. Usually prefer warm undertones, but trying a neutral base to counteract yellow tones due to winter paleness and natural black hair - successfully pulling off a cool tone look. - Surprisingly good at covering blemishes and uneven texture. Heavier application achieves that classic Western matte, flawless skin look. Bonus: No more foundation creasing around the nose. - Even when oil emerges, it doesn't break down messily. Instead, it fades naturally. - Light formula allows for cleansing with just a low pH cleanser. - Great portability due to compact size and inner lid that twists to close, preventing spills.
Cons- Wrong brush choice can result in a cakey application. For a softer finish at the expense of coverage, use a soft, long-bristled brush. - Doesn't cover large pores in the T-zone. Don't expect a flawless, picture-perfect finish. It's more of a 'My Skin But Better' (MSBB) effect. - Fails if skincare is too oily or moisturizing, causing powder to clump. Use light, quickly-absorbing hydrating products for best results. - 1w golden ivory: Personally, I'd prefer it slightly more yellow for a brighter look. Disappointingly, it seems to darken as more is applied for coverage. - Some darkening occurs in oily seasons and it's not water-resistant, making summer use impractical. As someone with combination dehydrated skin, I only use it in dry seasons (fall through early spring). - Inevitable powder fallout. Expect your vanity to get twice as messy.
Tip* Tool recommendations: 1. Real Techniques Expert Face Brush - Greatly improves coverage of blemishes and texture. Be careful with amount to avoid pilling. 2. Standard powder brush (using Daiso wooden handle) - Extremely natural look but poor coverage. 3. Real Techniques Buffing Brush (from Core Collection set) - Best skin finish. Combines advantages of 1 & 2. Highly recommended! Versatile for any foundation texture. 4. EcoTools Buffing Brush - Amazing for smoothing skin texture. Decent coverage. Note: Picks up more powder than others, so be careful to avoid cakiness. * Color selection guide: Colors are named in number-letter-name format (e.g., 1W Golden Ivory) - Number indicates brightness. 0 is lightest, increasing numbers are darker. - Letter denotes undertone: Cool (C), Warm (W), Neutral (N). C tends to be pinkish, W yellowish, and N ivory or slightly grayish. Generally, warm shades appear darker than cool or neutral in the same number range. - Names vary but are consistent across undertones for the same brightness. 'Golden' prefix indicates warm, 'rosy' indicates cool, no prefix is neutral. - For typical Korean 21-23 shades, recommend choosing brightness 0-3. * EM US official site often runs 'Buy 2 Get 1 Free' promotions. For international shoppers, Coupang Global is a good option.

The neutral shade range should work well for most light to medium skin tones (21-22 in Korean shades). As expected from a mineral foundation, it gives that 'your skin but better' look. I've even received compliments on my skin (it looks even better in person than in photos). Personally, I've noticed fewer blemishes and my skin feels lighter and more comfortable.
ConsWhile it's not a big issue for me as I'm unemployed, it can be fussy and time-consuming to apply. You need to maintain your brushes and prep your skin with just the right amount of moisture before application. This depends on the weather and your skin condition - too much hydration can cause the foundation to clump, while insufficient moisture or poor exfoliation can lead to flaking. Those with consistent skin conditions might face fewer of these issues. The longevity is average, similar to a moisturizing BB cream or foundation. It doesn't last as long as long-wear formulas like Estée Lauder Double Wear or Make Up For Ever HD Foundation. Without touch-ups, it tends to fade by evening, especially if you have oily skin. I usually touch up with a powder compact throughout the day. The coverage is medium - if you need more coverage, a matte base might be better. This semi-matte finish provides decent coverage and naturally evens out skin tone. For areas needing extra coverage, I use the brand's concealer or other concealers.
TipThe application can vary slightly depending on the brush used. Personally, I prefer rounded powder brushes over flat-top brushes. Lately, I've been using the Real Techniques Buffing Brush. When my skin looks particularly red, I mix in a bit of the brand's mint-colored color corrector to neutralize the redness.

I'm a middle-aged woman with blemishes who usually uses shade 23. I mainly use Semi-Matte 4N, Jojoba 3C, and occasionally 2W. I always start with 4N as a base (to even out my complexion), cover imperfections with the multi-tasking concealer, and then brighten the center of my face with 3C or 2W. The rest is up to my mood! My basic makeup routine takes just 5 minutes, and once it absorbs into the skin, it looks naturally beautiful. While it doesn't cover all blemishes, it's lightweight and feels comfortable on the skin, which is why I really love this cosmetic product.
ConsIf you don't use the brush correctly, it can clump... It seems to require a bit of skill. These days, dewy, hydrated skin with a glass-like glow is trendy, but this just gives a matte finish and can even make you look dry if you're not careful. It might be better suited for those who already have good skin.
TipIf you find the coverage lacking, try mixing it with jojoba oil or similar to create a custom shade that works for you. Apply a thin layer on your skin, and it'll be like an oil foundation - slightly moisturizing and covering blemishes. Just remember to apply it very thinly!

I bought one of the EM powders because it's so famous, and I chose Rosy Fair because I wanted one without yellow undertones. Now I'm wondering why I picked this when my face isn't even that pale. Reviews said that when applied, there's barely any color and it just acts like a regular powder. In reality, after tapping off the brush and lightly sweeping it on at the end, it controls oil and creates a more matte and brightened complexion. It's perfect for summer. Even though the shade is much lighter than my skin tone, it doesn't show if applied lightly, so I'm using it well. That being said, it's not a translucent powder.
ConsIf you can't control the amount on the brush, it can clump on your face... and it clumps while clearly showing its own color, making your face look patchy and uneven. Plus, it controls oil better than expected, so I don't use it much outside of summer. The powder flies everywhere... The holes are small, so if you tap it impatiently, you'll see an incredible amount of excess powder.
