That's why I always spend a lot of time and effort choosing gentle, non-irritating products for my skincare routine. I bought this from the Tonymoly website during a buy-one-get-one-free sale, and it turned out to be so much better than I expected that I decided to write a review! Application: As many people have mentioned, it's a very watery toner, so it requires some skill to apply. If you're not careful, it might get into your eyes like it did for me, which can be uncomfortable. Scent: The mugwort scent doesn't provoke a strong like or dislike reaction from me, so I used it comfortably! Unless I take a deep breath, I don't find the mugwort scent particularly noticeable. It gives a healthy feeling! Results After a Few Weeks: At first, I didn't notice any changes, but yesterday when I looked in the mirror, I felt like my skin had become smoother and clearer! A few acquaintances have told me that my skin has been looking better lately, and a friend of mine touched my face a few days ago and said it had become incredibly soft. Since the toner is the only change I've made to my skincare routine recently, I think it might be responsible for these improvements.
ConsBecause it's so watery, it tends to spill easily, and the opening of the bottle is always a bit damp. The price is a bit steep, but it might be worth it if you buy it during a sale period.
TipSince it's such a watery toner, you'll need to use other skincare products that provide good moisture to avoid any skin tightness.

As my skin became more soothed, I noticed the redness seemed to decrease a bit too. I applied it by soaking a cotton pad and gently wiping it over my skin, which worked well for me! The scent isn't purely mugwort; it's more like a blend of mugwort and a regular toner fragrance. It wasn't unpleasant, and after using it a few times, I got used to it. The scent doesn't linger long, so it wasn't bothersome at all!
ConsI didn't have any major complaints, but it's a bit runny, so when applying without a cotton pad, it would drip a little. (This isn't really a downside for me, more of a point to be aware of!)
TipI recommend using it with a cotton pad, gently wiping it across your skin! Even after cleansing, when I wiped along my skin texture with a cotton pad, I noticed some dirt coming off. If you're concerned about using cotton pads, even the ones from Daiso are fine - the quality isn't significantly lower for the price. In terms of value for money, I actually found it quite good! Anyway, try incorporating cotton pads into your routine!

That's when I discovered this essence! It claims to help with redness and skin soothing, so I decided to start with a lightweight essence instead of a rich, heavy cream due to my acne. At first, I didn't see results after a day or two, but after a week, the redness started to subside significantly. By the second week, my complexion looked clearer! Consistent use definitely shows results! For me, I used it morning and night after cleansing, exfoliating pads, and mist absorption, followed by the essence. Once or twice a week, I'd use it as a cotton pad mask. Even though I only used the essence alone, the effects were so good that I plan to buy the ampoule and cream together!
ConsThe price for just the essence alone is a bit disappointing. While it's effective, the liquid texture means it runs quickly, so if you accidentally spill a few drops, it feels like such a waste. Oh, and I have combination dehydrated skin! When I used only the essence, it felt fine right after application, but a few hours later, I could feel the dryness, which was disappointing. I wish it was richer and more affordable - I'd use it much more happily then.
TipI used it consistently with every cleanse, both morning and night. Some people apply it with a cotton pad, wiping or patting it on, but I just dropped 3-4 drops directly onto my face (which was plenty) and spread it evenly to absorb. On days when the redness was particularly bad, I'd soak a cotton pad generously and leave it on for 10-15 minutes like a mask. This really helped calm the redness and soothe my skin immediately!

As a toner, it fulfills its role effectively.
ConsPersonally, I don't like the scent. It feels too watery, which is disappointing as it can run off if you apply too much.
TipI strongly recommend using it with cotton pads.

I'm sharing this review after using the product for about three months. I actually have experience working part-time at Tonymoly for a month! Before that, I had some preconceptions about roadshop skincare products, but Tonymoly's skincare line was so cost-effective and packed with goodness that I changed my mind. Now I'm a fan of their skincare products! Let me start my honest, self-purchased review! Highlights of the product: 1. Large size Essences usually come in small bottles, making you want to use them sparingly. But this product comes in a generous 150ml, so you can apply it liberally! 2. Texture I prefer thinner essences, and this one has a water-like consistency! Check out the photo! Because it's so fluid, I applied it with a cotton pad after using toner. Otherwise, it would run too much on my face. It left my skin feeling clean, as if I'd applied an ampoule! 3. Scent As it's a mugwort herbal essence, it has a mugwort and herbal scent! Personally, I associate herbal scents with health, so I didn't mind it - my younger sister liked it too! I think it might be a matter of personal preference. Older folks might enjoy it as well! 4. Ingredients Looking at the ingredients, it says it's 100% mugwort extract! The Hwahae app also shows it has a low risk factor! 5. Soothing effect This product's main benefits are hydration and soothing! Mugwort's primary effect is soothing, right? It claims to calm redness, and while the effect wasn't dramatic, I did notice some improvement! After the essence was fully absorbed, my skin had a certain glow, indicating it was nourished and hydrated.
Cons1. The watery texture means it can run from your forehead to your chin, sometimes getting on your clothes. It also stings if it gets in your eyes, which made me scared to apply it on my forehead. 2. Since it's a herbal product with mugwort extract, results may vary! It worked very well for me, but it's not an extremely gentle product, so be aware that it might not suit everyone.
TipI've been using this routine for almost a year! Here's a reference for those interested: After cleansing with Tonymoly The Chok Chok Green Tea Toner, I spray Avene Thermal Spring Water and let it absorb. Then I apply Aestura AC Control Emulsion. Next, I use Goodal serum followed by this First Essence. Finally, I mix Centella Cicaderm cream with Centella Dressing Powder and apply it to areas with blemishes! Simple, right? You'll notice a lot of Tonymoly products - I bought them all myself! I guess their marketing worked on me! That concludes my review of the Tonymoly Strengthening Pure Mugwort First Essence. Thank you!

I found it convenient to use, either by applying it with a cotton pad or spritzing it as a mist. It was also great for DIY sheet masks using Daiso mask sheets. It's more oil-rich than hydrating, which made it perfect for winter use. I loved that I could layer it without it feeling heavy, and it absorbs well into the skin.
ConsFirst off, I really disliked the scent. Instead of the expected mugwort aroma, it had a strong, harsh herbal smell. While the scent faded quickly, it was initially overpowering. Secondly, I feel deceived by the staff's claim about its effectiveness in reducing redness. After a month of consistent use, I've seen no improvement in my redness at all. Thirdly, I was shocked by how runny the texture is - when I accidentally spilled some, it went everywhere, which was both surprising and wasteful. Fourth, the price is extremely high, even with discounts. Lastly, I experienced some eye irritation. Due to the scent and price, I doubt I'll repurchase this product.
TipTry using it with a refillable container and DIY sheet masks for best results.

After a day when your skin feels hot and flushed from the sun, use this essence and see the difference the next morning. It definitely helps reduce redness and seems to calm the skin. Plus, it's wonderfully hydrating. I highly recommend it!
ConsSince it's a water-based essence, it inevitably runs a bit. You should keep that in mind when purchasing. It's not a thick consistency, but considering that, I think it's still worth using.
TipI use the Innisxx 5-layer cotton pads, separating them into individual layers. I apply the essence to my forehead, cheeks, chin, and nose. After about 5 minutes, it feels like my skin has become truly hydrated, as if I've done a full mask treatment. It also creates a great base for makeup. Strongly recommended!

Clean ingredients: 100% mugwort extract As you can see from the ingredient list, there are no harmful components in this product. Unless you're sensitive to mugwort, you can use it with peace of mind. I don't have particularly sensitive skin, so I didn't experience any stinging or redness upon first use, which was great. This would be suitable for those who, like me, don't have an aversion to herbal products and don't have sensitive skin! 2. Effective for skin soothing I didn't notice it immediately, but after continued use (though it might be my imagination), it seems to have a soothing effect on the skin. When skincare doesn't suit my skin type, I often experience tingling or redness, but after using this, the redness seems to have decreased. Also, as my skin became more soothed, my makeup application improved. Previously, foundation would sit on top of my skin without absorbing, but these issues seem to have diminished. The texture isn't as thin as Sulwhasoo's First Care Activating Serum, but it seems to have similar soothing effects. Another reviewer suggested storing the product either in the refrigerator or at room temperature due to its sensitivity to temperature changes. Since refrigeration might be inconvenient, I'd recommend keeping it at room temperature and then cooling cotton pads soaked in the essence in the fridge before using them as a soothing mask. I plan to try this method for skin soothing next time. 3. Improves makeup application Probably due to its soothing effects, makeup applies well after using this product. My skin condition varies with my menstrual cycle, sometimes looking fine and other times appearing dull. I used to have issues with makeup not adhering well, but after using this product, my foundation and powder apply smoothly, making my skin look really good.
Cons<Areas for improvement> 1. Lack of hydration: The texture is closer to a watery toner than an essence, and one application might not feel sufficient. Due to its toner-like consistency, it's difficult to evaluate its absorption or moisturizing properties. I used it as a toner replacement, applying it with a cotton pad after my initial toner step when doing my makeup. Given my dry skin type and the essence's lack of intense hydration, I had to use multiple products in my skincare routine. (Morning routine: water cleanse, exfoliating toner once, Tony Moly Mugwort Essence once, eye cream, AHC Red Serum once, emulsion, and cream) 2. Herbal (mugwort) scent: Due to the mugwort content, the product has a yellowish color and a slight herbal scent. While I didn't find the scent overpowering, those who dislike herbal fragrances or have sensitive noses might find this aspect off-putting. 3. Somewhat pricey for a single purchase: At 42,000 won for 150ml, it requires a bit of a splurge. This is probably due to the 100% mugwort extract content. If the cost is a concern, consider purchasing during a sale event.
TipI primarily used this as a toner in my skincare routine. Since it has a water-like texture rather than a typical essence, I would first cleanse with a toner-soaked cotton pad, then apply this product, followed by another essence product. When your skin needs soothing, try soaking a cotton pad generously with this product, chilling it in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes, and using it as a cooling mask. That could work wonders!

It's great as a first serum and also works well as a mask. I keep rolling it with an anion device, and I love how it feels like it's deeply absorbing into my skin.
ConsBecause it's so thin, the container is inconvenient. It spills easily, which is a waste... I wish it came in a pump or spray bottle. I guess I could just transfer it to a different container though.
TipUse about three layers, really generously. It might seem like you're using a lot, but it's worth it because it works so well!

I've been having allergic reactions to every skincare product I've used lately, but this one didn't cause any blemishes. It has a light, water-based formula that feels refreshing when layered. When I applied it with a cotton pad as an overnight mask on a newly formed, red pimple, I woke up to find it had calmed down significantly. That's when I knew this product was the real deal.
ConsBecause of its water-based formula, it can sometimes run out too quickly if you're not careful, which feels wasteful.
TipThe sales associate mentioned that this product is made entirely from mugwort extract, without any preservatives. They advised using it within 6 months and stressed the importance of consistent storage due to its sensitivity to temperature changes. Whether you choose to refrigerate it or keep it at room temperature, stick to one method. I'm keeping mine at room temperature for convenience, but I think storing it in the fridge during summer and applying it cool would be amazing for soothing the skin.
