However, I found that it didn't quite suit my needs in several ways, which was disappointing. First, I should mention that I tend to have redness in the center of my face. My usual routine involves applying sunscreen, lightly covering with a color corrector, or using a light foundation for base makeup. My main concern is evening out my skin tone to cover the redness. With that in mind, I had high hopes for this tone-up cream from a men's cosmetics brand. I'll discuss the drawbacks later, but let me first highlight some positive aspects: 1. The packaging is sleek, and the product name 'Spotlight' is quite impactful. It's interesting to note that while their existing product line mainly features black packaging, they've innovatively chosen white for this tone-up cream. I found this quite appealing! 2. I'm somewhat satisfied with the texture. The product's application can be divided into before and after the green capsules burst. I was surprised by how smooth and silky it felt before the capsules burst. This was a definite plus. 3. It definitely brightens the complexion. While I personally prefer a tone-up effect that covers redness, those looking for a general brightening effect might be satisfied. My skin tone is between shades 22 and 23, so I expected a men's product not to have such a strong brightening effect. However, this wasn't the case. Since it's not a product with different shade options, I believe it would brighten any skin tone.
Cons1. As someone who regularly applies base makeup, I didn't anticipate any issues with the application process - patting the product into the skin for absorption. However, it was more challenging than expected. This ties into point 3 of the positives - while the texture is smooth like skincare products before the green capsules burst, it becomes thicker and takes on a green tint afterwards. To avoid the product clumping and creating a green cast, you need to apply it evenly over the appropriate facial area while it's still smooth, before the capsules burst. In simpler terms, you need to quickly judge where and how much to apply because it starts to thicken rapidly. I found this quite difficult. My dry skin and thorough moisturizing routine might have contributed to the clumping issue. 2. The green capsules are meant to counteract redness, but they don't effectively do so. Instead of covering redness, they burst and create an odd complexion, similar to when you've applied too much green color corrector or concealer. When your face turns pale, you truly understand why this product is named 'Spotlight'... 3. This could be a pro or con depending on the person, but once you've applied the tone-up cream, there's no going back unless you wash it off. You absolutely cannot reduce the brightness level of your complexion. I thought applying my usual foundation might help balance out the overly brightened skin, but it just looked like I'd used a foundation one shade too light. This might be due to my lack of understanding about tone-up creams, but the brightening effect is certainly irreversible. Lastly, I have a question. The official website suggests applying this morning and night. If it's actually a functional cosmetic product rather than the final step in skincare as I had assumed, I might have misunderstood its purpose entirely. Given that there's no information about SPF, it could be a whitening and anti-wrinkle product meant for twice-daily use. If you're looking for a simple base makeup or a tone-up cream to replace makeup, please check the level of redness in your skin and make sure to test the product at a store before purchasing!
TipApply the product to your face with small, gradual pumps. Don't try to apply a large amount at once and then remove the excess, or approach it with a 'it'll work out somehow' attitude. You never know how it might turn out on your face if you do!
